Online Publication, Institute for International Cultural Relations - ifa, Stuttgart/Berlin, 2015
How is the memory of history expressed in the public space of African cities? What role does art play in processes of urban transformation? These are the questions addressed in the online publication Future Memories. Future Memories conference and online publication is an initiative of the Institute for International Cultural Relations (ifa, Stuttgart/Berlin) in partnership with the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa University and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. At stake is the need for a specific African debate on globalisation, urbanisation, and structures of power.
Future Memories collects texts, sound-recordings and images related to the debate concerning art, public space and memory culture in Africa. The conceptual mosaic of this online publication interlinks formats employed in the visual and performing arts, architecture, film, literature, history and art history. Authors from Cameroon, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Germany, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal and South Africa, actively involved in the production of art and engaged in artistic processes, curatorial and scientific experiences in public space, here find a platform for their voices. Their decidedly analytical and intervention-oriented interest highlights the significance of the arts as a critical tool of the social and political context as manifestly as their resolve to interact with public spaces so as to take part in shaping their future. The various contributions illustrate a series of locally focused debates regarding monuments and monumentality, urban globalisation, urbanisation and power structures imbued symbolically. In many instances the ongoing radical overhaul of Addis Ababa and its immediate environs sets the immediate background.
This online publication Future Memories is published by Elke aus dem Moore, Head of the Art Department at ifa - Institute for International Cultural Relations, Stuttgart, Berhanu Ashagrie Deribew, Director of the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Addis Ababa in tandem with curator Marie-Hélène Gutberlet as Editor-in-Chief.
