Developing Cultural Industries: Learning from the Palimpsest of Practice
By Christiaan De Beukelaer, European Cultural Foundation, 2015, 189 pages
The book Developing Cultural Industries: Learning from the Palimpsest of Practice is the result of the European Cultural Foundation's 9th Cultural Policy Research Award in 2012. It explores the connection between culture and human development focusing on the policy implications of increased attention on cultural and creative industries concepts in what is commonly referred to as 'developing countries'.
Christiaan De Beukelaer examines the implementation of culturally focused development policies in Ghana and Burkina Faso. He looks into the role of the music industries in Ghana and Burkina Faso in particular, and in doing so is able to draw conclusions on the potential and the deficits in the existing development approaches for these areas. Combining an empirical study of the cultural industries of Africa with an understanding for broader insights regarding global implications of the European debate surrounding creative industries, the author's work will greatly benefit our thinking about cultural policy.
