Call for Volunteers at the Traditional Indian Theatre School
The Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam is a residential school where around 50 village children study traditional Kattaikkuttu theatre and a standard academic curriculum. Kattaikkuttu, a combination of song, music, dance and drama, is a popular theatre of the northern parts of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a theatre of ritual and entertainment, closely tied in with the social, economic, religious and communicative domains of contemporary village life.
The school is looking for motivated, adventurous and suitably experienced/qualified people to help with:
- teaching English (6 months minimum),
- caring for students,
- public relations and promotional activities,
- fundraising, and
- artistic workshops, in particular a voice coach.
Volunteers will receive a bedroom and bathroom, all meals, access to an extensive range of resources, the chance to experience live theatre performance, meet people from around the world and make lasting friendships.
The starting date is 15 June 2011. The academic year will run through 15 April 2012.
