Government Spending on Culture 2000-2004

Statistics New Zealand and Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Wellington, 2005, 36 pp., ISBN 0-478-26963-6

This report is part of the Cultural Statistics Programme, a joint initiative of Statistics New Zealand and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. The programme is outlined in the publication New Zealand Framework for Cultural Statistics Te Anga Tatauranga Tikanga--iwi o Aotearoa (1995), which provides a classifi cation system for cultural activities and enables the identifi cation and collection of a consistent set of data about the sector.

Government Spending on Culture 2005 provides an overview of government support for the arts, culture and heritage sectors in New Zealand at both central and local government levels, from 1999/2000 to 2003/2004. It also examines the contribution by Lottery Board Grants to these sectors.

A new series of data on local authority spending in the cultural sector has been established, which is timely given the increasing emphasis local authorities are placing on cultural well being in their planning and work programmes. This report was researched and written by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, with support and production by Statistics New Zealand.
