Musical Life in Germany - Structure, Facts and Figures
German Music Council, Bonn, 2011, ISBN 978-3-940768-24-7
With the present English-language publication, the German Music Information Centre (MIZ), the central institution for information on music and musical life in Germany, under the aegis of the German Music Council, is for the first time publishing selected facts and figures on Germany's musical life for an international readership. The articles describe the major subareas of Germany's musical life and survey their structures and recent developments in Germany's musical life, with topics ranging from music education to amateur music-making, and from the funding and professional practice of music to the music industry and the media.
Michael Söndermann's contribution describes the rich array of branches subsumed under the heading of 'music industry' on the basis of official data and information from professional associations. The paper refers to the entire field of music industry, which, in the case of Germany, encompasses not just the recording industry, but a great number of additional economic branches, among them self-employed musicians and performing artists, musical ensembles working in the private sector, publishing firms, musical instrument manufacturers, private concert organizers and agencies, record companies, recording studios and other business involved in the exploitation of music. These branches are commonly called the economic core area, or the music industry in the narrow sense in Germany.
