Re-tooling Residencies: A Closer Look at the Mobility of Art Professionals

Edited by Anna Ptak, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Poland, 2011, 258 pp., ISBN: 978-83-61156-35-2

The publication Re-tooling Residencies: A Closer Look at the Mobility of Art Professionals, was published within the framework of the two-year project Re-tooling Residencies, one of European Commission's Pilot Programmes for Artistic Mobility. The project was organized in collaboration between the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle as part of its A-I-R Laboratory programme (Warsaw, Poland), the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart, Germany), the FUTURA Centre for Contemporary Art (Prague, Czech Republic), Gasworks (London, UK) and Botkyrka Konsthall (Stockholm, Sweden).

This publication represents an important source of knowledge about the topic of artistic residencies as a cultural form of artists and curators work, whose relevance is constantly growing in recent years. Throughout this book, a variety of possible residency formats is presented, as defined and experienced by cultural producers. All authors speak from their position as practitioners, who either run specific programmes or undertake activity as artists, curators, activists, managers, and/or theoreticians, actively reflecting and animating cultural mobility.

Re-tooling Residencies: A Closer Look at the Mobility of Art Professionals is a sign that critical and practical investigations are needed in the field. This is especially important in the countries of Eastern Europe, where the institutionalization of residency programmes is a relatively new phenomenon that is currently undergoing the process of legitimisation. Both the book and related website represent a call for qualitative reflection.
