Fresh Perspectives 8: Safeguarding the daring voice. Arts and Freedom of Expression
By Sidd Joag, published by IETM - International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts in partnership with Arts Everywhere/Musagetes, 2018, 20 pages, ISBN: 978-2-930897-33-2
Censorship comes in many forms and shapes. The 'typical' cases are those of top-down repression of artists and other dissident voices by political powers or religious institutions with more or less explicit political authority, which deny permits, withdraw funding or even resort to violent means to silence unwelcome voices. However, we increasingly see - or acknowledge - cases where citizens' groups united by a religious or political ideology rally against a specific artist or artwork. Several organizations around the world do exceptional work to combat censorship, enhance artistic freedom and support artists in danger, allowing them to continue to create even in extreme situations.
This issue of Fresh Perspectives features several 'newcomers', professionals who are young, emerging, and/or not yet widely known, whose work at the intersection of arts and social change, whether by choice or by accident, has experienced censorship and repression and/or who have begun to create critical links across sectors. It also focuses on identity factors such as ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age and disability, increasing their vulnerability to political pressures (if not overt censorship, they are easily victim of targeted budget cuts, dismissal for political reasons, among others) or to (more or less authentic) 'censorship by the crowd'. Between the lines, it explores (artistic) strategies to counter all these kinds of pressure and to continue with one's work in spite of extreme situations.
